About

Deep institutional knowledge. Practical outcomes.

Chronotope Consulting was founded on a simple premise: that the most effective advisory work comes from people who understand how government actually operates — not just in theory, but in practice.

About the firm

Chronotope Consulting is a specialist advisory firm focused on government, regulation, and public sector reform. We work with Commonwealth, state, and territory agencies — and the regulated industries that interact with them — on the policy, regulatory, and organisational challenges that matter most.

The firm's name reflects a core conviction: that context is everything. The word 'chronotope' — from the Greek for time and place — captures the idea that effective advisory work must be grounded in the specific institutional, political, and historical context of each engagement. Generic frameworks and off-the-shelf solutions rarely work in government. What works is deep understanding of the particular.

We are a small firm by design. Every engagement is led by John Hamill directly. Clients get senior expertise applied to their problem — not delegated to junior staff after the pitch.

What guides us

Our principles

01

Rigour

We apply the same analytical standards to every engagement, regardless of size. Our advice is grounded in evidence, not assertion.

02

Directness

We tell clients what the evidence shows — including when it is uncomfortable. We do not produce reports designed to confirm what clients already believe.

03

Practical focus

Our recommendations are designed to be implemented. We think carefully about what is achievable in the institutional context our clients actually face.

Work with us

If you are facing a regulatory challenge, a reform mandate, or a capability gap, we would welcome a conversation.
